Begging - Goumune

Japanese: 乞胸 - ごうむね

〘Noun〙 (It can mean either begging for money or because they lived in tenement houses. ) In the Edo period, this was a group of begging entertainers who performed ayatori (cradle tricks), saruwaka ( monkey play) , Edo manzai ( Edo manzai), tsujihoka (street play) , lectures, etc. to ask for money. ※Essays, Tankai (1795), 14 "There is a kind of person in the world who is not a reprobate, but wears silks and begs with sleeves, and goes about his life. These people are called koumune. The characters for koumune are koumune and shoji."

〘名〙 (お志を乞(こ)う意とも、合棟の長屋に住んでいたからともいう) 江戸時代、綾取(あやとり)、猿若(さるわか)、江戸万歳(まんざい)、辻放下(つじほうか)、講釈などを演じて物貰いをした乞食芸人の集団。※随筆・譚海（1795）一四「世間に非人にもあらずして、絹布類を著し、袖乞をなして、渡世する一種有、此ものこうむねと号す。文字には乞胸と書事也」
