[Bunmeihon Setsuyoshu (Muromachi period)]② A pearl shell. ※Nippo Jisho (1603-04) "Auogai (あヲガ) 〈translation〉 Pearl shell"③ A snail shell of the family Saxifraga. It is found along the coast south of Boso to the Korean Peninsula, where it attaches to the underside of boulders. The shell is elliptical and umbrella-shaped, about two centimeters long. The outer surface is dark green with weak lines, and the inner surface is a beautiful pale blue. ④ The blue part of the underside of an abalone shell has been polished. Used for buttons, etc. ⑤ An abalone whose flesh is blue in color.

〘名〙① 螺鈿(らでん)の材料に用いるヤコウガイ、オウムガイ、アワビなどの総称。また、それらを用いた細工。青貝塗り。〔文明本節用集（室町中）〕② 真珠貝。※日葡辞書（1603‐04）「Auogai(アヲガイ)〈訳〉真珠貝」③ ユキノカサガイ科の巻き貝。房総以南の沿岸から朝鮮半島に分布し、転石の裏に付着する。殻は楕円形の傘状で、殻長約二センチメートル。外面は暗緑色で弱い筋があり、内面は美しい淡青色をしている。④ アワビの殻の裏の青色の部分をみがいたもの。ボタンなどに用いる。⑤ アワビのうち、肉が青色を帯びたもの。
