A weed of the Cyperaceae family that grows in wet areas such as the ridges of rice paddies, the edges of ponds and rivers. It is a thin, tough annual plant with root hairs and small clumps. The stem is 20-60 cm tall, less than 1 mm wide, without nodes, with 2-3 thin linear leaves at the base, and from August to October, it produces an inflorescence with 2-3 bracts and a few branches at the top. The spikelets are reddish brown or purple brown, thin and flat. The fruit is lenticular, strongly flattened from both sides, and the style has two stigmas. It is widely distributed in Eurasia and tropical Asia, from the Mediterranean region to Australia, and in Japan it is found in lowlands and mountain wetlands throughout the country except Hokkaido.
