A weed of the Cyperaceae family that grows in wet areas such as the ridges of rice paddies, the edges of ponds and rivers. It is a thin, tough annual plant with root hairs and small clumps. The stem is 20-60 cm tall, less than 1 mm wide, without nodes, with 2-3 thin linear leaves at the base, and from August to October, it produces an inflorescence with 2-3 bracts and a few branches at the top. The spikelets are reddish brown or purple brown, thin and flat. The fruit is lenticular, strongly flattened from both sides, and the style has two stigmas. It is widely distributed in Eurasia and tropical Asia, from the Mediterranean region to Australia, and in Japan it is found in lowlands and mountain wetlands throughout the country except Hokkaido. 水田のあぜや,池沼の縁,河川の岸などの湿った土地に生える,カヤツリグサ科の雑草。全体に細くて硬い一年草で,ひげ根があり,小さな株を作る。茎は高さ20~60cm,幅1mm以下で節はなく,根もとに細い線形の葉が2~3枚あり,8~10月,頂に2~3枚の苞葉と少数個の枝のある花序をつける。小穂は赤褐色か紫褐色で,細く,扁平。果実は左右から強く扁平となったレンズ形で,花柱には2個の柱頭がある。地中海地方からオーストラリアまで,ユーラシア大陸と熱帯アジアに広く分布し,日本では北海道を除いた全国の低地や山中の湿地に見られる。
