…His second novel, The Spies (1821), made him famous as a writer. He found the subject of art in General Washington and his spies during the Revolutionary War, which was the subject of interest and challenge for American writers shortly after independence. He then wrote Lionel Lincoln (1825), The Tragic Story of Wish-ton-Wish (1829), and Wyandte (1843), which dealt with similar subjects and the American history of 17th-century colonists and Indians, paving the way for a new national literature. He also used the forests and lakes of New York State, where he spent his childhood, and the lives of sailors and naval officers, where he spent his youth, as subjects in The Pilot (1823), Two Admirals (1842), and others. …
