Indian Chintz

Japanese:
Indian Chintz

This refers to dyed fabric made in India on cotton fabric with patterns hand-drawn or woodblock printed. It seems to have been made from very ancient times, and according to documents it was exported to Rome during the Roman era and admired there. The oldest actual material available today is one from before the 15th century that was excavated in Fustat, a suburb of Cairo, Egypt. In Japan, fabrics imported in the 17th and 18th centuries remain, highly valued as Kowatari chintz. The main production areas are the Coromandel region on the east coast facing the Bay of Bengal, and the central Deccan Plateau. Many of those in the northern region are folk-style fabrics made from rough, ripped cloth.
