An evergreen fern of the Pterocallidaceae family. From the creeping rhizome, it produces sparse leaves with 7-8 pairs of broad linear elliptical pinnae. The lower pinnae are further divided into pinnates. It has a thick, paper-like, tough grass with a glossy surface and finely serrated edges. The sporangia are linear along the veins, lining the inside of the leaf, leaving 5 mm from the edge. The tips of the pinnae taper abruptly and sharply, which distinguishes it from Iwagane-sou, which has gradually tapered tips. Iwagane-zenmai also has free veins that branch out into two branches, while Iwagane-sou has a reticulated connection next to the mid-vein of the pinnae. It grows in mountain forests throughout Japan.
