Fumiyamada

Japanese:
Fumiyamada

The title of a Kyogen piece. Miscellaneous Kyogen. In the Izumi school, it is written as "Bun Sanzoku." Two bandits come out chasing a traveler (who does not appear on stage). When the shite bandit says "Oh dear," the other misunderstands it to mean "let him go," and they fail again today. They argue, saying that it is the other's fault that things always go wrong, and start a duel. As they struggle, they decide that if they die without anyone finding out about their brave act, it would be the same as dying in vain, so they should at least leave a note for their wives and children. The note they write gradually changes from the situation to a plea for their families, and the two begin to cry. They reconcile, realizing that they could have kept it to themselves, and go home together. In an era when life was cheap, the true essence of this Kyogen lies in the loud singing of "I went home dying in vain."
