Red Hat Rebellion

...The Breton region was the latest to appoint local governors, the key to the centralization of power under the monarchy, and it was not until 1689 that they were appointed. The Red Hats revolt (also known as the Stamp Tax Revolt) of 1675, which was triggered by the imposition of new taxes, was one of the most violent revolts under Louis XIV's reign, and it also strongly reflected the Breton sense of independence. During the French Revolution, Brittany was one of the first to form the Breton Club, the precursor to the Jacobin Club, and was a willing supporter of the revolution. It was against this deep-rooted anti-central sentiment that the Chouannerie revolted in 1794 after the implementation of the Constitutional Law for the Clergy and the Conscription Law.
