Jean de Meung

Japanese: ジャン･ド･マン（英語表記）Jean de Meung

Around 1240 - 1305
French poet and translator. His real name was Jean Chopinel or Clopinel. He was born in Meun-sur-Loire, near Orléans, and lived in the Rue Saint-Jacques in Paris. There is no proof that he was an aristocrat, but he is presumed to have been well off. He had a bachelor's degree and was well versed in classical and medieval works, and was well educated and philosophical. He probably had contact with intellectuals at the university who were under the influence of Averroës. He was particularly influenced by Boethius, Ovid, Alanus of Lille, and Guillaume de Saint-Amour.

フランスの詩人，翻訳家。本名ジャン･ショピネルChopinelまたはクロピネルClopinel。オルレアンに近いマン･シュル･ロアールに生まれ，パリのサン･ジャック街に住んだ。貴族の確証はないが，豊かな暮しぶりであったと推定される。文学士の資格を有し，古典や中世の著作に通じ，哲学的素養と博識を誇る。おそらくアベロエスの影響下にあった大学の知識人たちと接触があったであろう。しかし特にボエティウス，オウィディウス，リールのアラヌス，ギヨーム･ド･サン･タムールから深い影響を受ける。
