…He then studied law at the University of Poitiers, and received his bachelor's degree in 1616. However, he was disappointed with the school's studies other than mathematics, and set off on a journey around 1618 to see the wider world. He first joined the Dutch army as a volunteer officer, and at the end of 1618 he met the Dutch scientist Isaac Beeckman (1588-1637), who had a strong influence on him, teaching him new ways of using mathematics in the study of natural science. The following year he went to Germany and joined the Catholic army fighting in the Thirty Years' War. During the winter, while stationed in Neuburg in southern Germany, he pondered in the hearth room, generalizing the method of mathematical analysis as a universal method of learning, which gave him the prospect of unifying all academic fields, and he resolved to devote his life to this work. …
