Fukui Plain - Fukui Heiya

Formerly called Echizen Plain. A plain in northern Fukui Prefecture. It is divided into the Takefu Basin to the south by the narrow area of Mount Monju, and the Sakai Plain north of the Kuzuryu River, but in a broad sense it includes these. It is bordered on the east by the Kaetsu Mountains and the Echizen Chuo Mountains, and on the west by the Nyu Mountains and the Nishiago Fault. This subsidence area was formed by the flow of the Kuzuryu River, Hino River, and Asuwa River, and has changed from a gentle alluvial fan to a delta. The northern end is separated from the Sea of Japan by the Kaetsu Plateau and Sanrihama. As a result, there were many wet rice fields with poor drainage as one went north, but land improvement work was gradually carried out and they were converted to dry rice fields. Large dams were built at the entrances to the Kuzuryu River and Asuwa River for irrigation. There are records that the area was developed as manors for Kofuku-ji and Todai-ji temples during the Nara period, and old drawings of Chimori-sho on the southern outskirts of Fukui City and Kusoki-sho on the north side of Mount Monju remain in the Shosoin Repository.

かつては越前平野といった。福井県北部の平野。文珠山のある狭隘部によって以南の武生盆地，さらに九頭竜 (くずりゅう) 川以北を坂井平野に区分されるが，広義にはこれらを含めて呼ぶ。東側は加越山地と越前中央山地により，西側は丹生山地と西安居 (にしあごう) 断層により境されている。この沈降地域に九頭竜川，日野川，足羽 (あすわ) 川が流入して形成されたもので，ゆるやかな扇状地面から三角州に移っている。また北端部は加越台地と三里浜によって日本海とへだてられる。そのために北にいくに従って排水不良の湿田が多かったが，次第に土地改良が進められ，乾田化された。九頭竜川，足羽川の平野への流入口にはそれぞれ大堰堤を造り灌漑に利用している。開拓は奈良時代に興福寺，東大寺の荘園として開かれた記録があり，福井市南郊の道守 (ちもり) 庄，文珠山北側の糞置 (くそき) 庄の古い絵図が正倉院に残っている。
