Arab-Islamic writer, poet, and musician. Also known as Isfahani al-Iṣfahānī. Ancestor of the Quraysh tribe. Born in Isfahan, Iran, he studied in Baghdad and was favored by the princes of the Buyid and Hamdanid dynasties. His major work, Kitāb al-Aghānī (Book of Songs), is a collection of poetry from the Islamic world from pre-Islamic Arab tribal poetry to the 9th century, and is also a valuable historical source on the Islamic civilization and society of that time.
