Veronica caninotesticulata; speedwell

Japanese: イヌノフグリ(英語表記)Veronica caninotesticulata; speedwell
Veronica caninotesticulata; speedwell
A biennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family. It grows along roadsides and in fields. The stem is 5-20 cm long, branches at the base, and creeps along the ground. The leaves are opposite at the bottom and alternate at the top, ovate or round, and serrated. From early spring to early summer, a single flower is produced in the leaf axil. The flower stalk is thin, 1.5-4 cm long, and the calyx and corolla are four-lobed. The corolla is about 8 mm in diameter and pale pink-purple. The fruit is a flattened sphere with a concave tip. Very similar to this species are Veronica persicae, which has large flowers and leaves, and Veronica persicae, which has upright stems and flowers with almost no stalks; both are naturalized plants native to Europe.
