Tan'an Ito

A scholar of Chinese classics in the early Edo period. A native of Kyoto. One theory is that he died on February 22nd. His surname was Fujiwara, his given name was Sojo, and his pen name was Motomu. He was also known by the pen names Tan'an and Jiido. He studied under Emura Sensai and Nawa Katsusho. He became a Confucian scholar in the Echizen Fukui domain, and retired to Kyoto in his later years. At the time, he was well known for his poetry and prose, and his name appeared in the ukiyo-zoshi Genroku Taiheiki along with his friend Kitayama Yusen. He was also highly regarded as a Confucian scholar, and his down-to-earth attitude, particularly in the way he paid careful attention to the readings and annotations, can be seen in his work Rojin Zatsuwa, which he transcribed from the dictations of his teacher Emura Sensai, and although it was only a copy, it was widely circulated as an important book for understanding the people who lived from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the early Edo period. <Works> Tan'an Shibunshu

江戸時代前期の漢学者。京都の人。一説に没日を2月22日とする。姓は藤原氏,名は宗恕,字は元務。坦庵,自怡堂などと号す。江村専斎,那波活所に学ぶ。越前福井藩の藩儒となり,晩年は京都に退隠。当時,詩文における名声が高く,その名は,友人北山友仙と共に浮世草子『元禄大平記』に登場するほどであった。儒者としての評価も高く,特に訓点に心を用いた堅実な態度が窺える。また師の江村専斎の口述を筆記した『老人雑話』は,安土桃山から江戸初期の人物を知るうえで重要な書物として,写本ながら数多く流布した。<著作>『坦庵詩文集』
