Democratic Party for the People

Japanese: 国民民主党 - こくみんみんしゅとう

A Japanese political party. It was founded on April 28, 1950, by the merger of the Democratic Party opposition faction, the National Cooperative Party, and the New Political Council. It was founded as a conservative left-wing party in opposition to Yoshida Shigeru's Democratic Liberal Party, which absorbed the Democratic Party coalition faction to form the Liberal Party in early 1950. Its supreme chairman was Tomabechi Yoshizo, and its secretary-generals were Chiba Saburo and later Miki Takeo. Discussions boiled over within the Democratic Party for the People over participation in the San Francisco Peace Conference (→Peace Treaty with Japan), and Chairman Tomabechi became a member of the plenipotentiaries on the condition that "we would sign the peace treaty but not the Japan-US Security Treaty." After the peace treaty, the party welcomed back members of the New Politics Club (affiliated with the Constitutional Democratic Party), who had been released from exile, and also brought together the Farmers Cooperative Party and others, forming the Progressive Party on February 8, 1952, before dissolving. 日本の政党。1950年4月28日，民主党野党派と国民協同党，新政治協議会が合同して発足した。1950年初め，吉田茂の民主自由党が民主党連立派を吸収し自由党を発足させたのに対抗し，保守左派的政党として結成。最高委員長は苫米地義三，幹事長は千葉三郎，のち三木武夫。サンフランシスコ講和会議（→対日講和条約）参加をめぐり国民民主党党内は論議が沸騰，苫米地委員長は「講和条約には調印するが，日米安全保障条約には調印しない」条件で全権団の一員となった。講和後同党は，新政クラブ（立憲民政党系）の追放解除者を迎え，また農民協同党などを集め，1952年2月8日改進党を結成して解党した。（→自由民主党）
