A post town on the Tokaido in Hoi County, Mikawa Province. It is part of the current Otowa Town, Aichi Prefecture (now Toyokawa City). It has flourished as an inn since the Middle Ages, and articles about the inn can be found in the Kaido-ki and Tokan-kiko, while the Genpei Seisuiki records the courtesans of Akasaka. In 1591, Ikeda Terumasa ordered Akasaka to keep 46 horses on standby. When it was designated as a post station on the Tokaido in 1601, it was considered as one inn together with Goyu (now Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture) to the east, but it soon began to operate its own horse and man relay service. At the beginning of the Edo period, it was divided into two towns, east and west. In 1693, the town was 8 cho 30 ken long and had 1,935 residents. In 1707, the number of guests was 103,076. According to the Yadomura Daigaicho, there were 3 honjin, 1 wakihonjin, and 62 inns. It is said that there were many prostitutes in Akasaka-shuku, and in the 1801 book "Kaigen Kiko," it is written, "There are many prostitutes. Although they are the same inn, Goyu is rustic and Akasaka is nice." The scenery of the Edo period inns is well preserved, and to the west of the inn are the remains of Empress Jito's temporary palace and Miyajiyama, which is said to be the site of Minamoto no Yoritomo's lodgings. The Akasaka magistrate's office, which had jurisdiction over the shogunate's territory in Mikawa, was also located here.Akasaka→ Related topics Shiba|Minato [ward] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
