A nobleman during the Northern and Southern Courts period. Son of Kinkata. His mother was a lady-in-waiting. He gained the trust of Emperor Godaigo and became a councillor in 1328 (Karyaku 3). Since the Shochu Incident (1324), he had been involved in the Emperor's plans to overthrow the shogunate, and so during the Genko Incident (1331), he was captured at Rokuhara and entrusted to his father Kinkata. During the Kenmu government, he was appointed as a resident of the Zassoketsudansho (Division of Appeals). In 1335 (Kenmu 2), when Ashikaga Takauji rebelled against the Kenmu government, he fought on the side of Emperor Godaigo and the Ashikaga side. Although he was temporarily victorious, he eventually fled to Yoshino, where he worked with Kitabatake Chikafusa to restore the power of the Southern Court as a senior vassal of the Southern Court serving Emperor Godaigo. He rose to the high rank of Junior First Rank Left Minister. In 51 (Shohei 6, Kan'o 2), the Southern Court succeeded in unifying the country, but it soon split up, and thereafter the Northern and Southern Courts continued to fight for Kyoto. He died in Yoshino on August 19, 13th year of Shohei, before his father. [Tanabe Hisako] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
