Small writing - Kogaki

A special type of Noh performance. It is so named because it is written in small letters to the left of the program. It is thought that kogaki performances were established after the mid-Edo period, and today about 1,000 types have been established and registered for each school and role. With kogaki, the aim of the piece changes and is emphasized, and the performance is treated as more important than a regular Noh performance. There may be changes to the masks, costumes, props, and musical accompaniment, as well as to the characters, and the script may be shortened or a different script may be inserted. Kyogen also has a small number of kogaki, but there are no essential changes like in Noh.

能の特殊演出のこと。曲目の左わきに小さく書き添えるため、この名がある。小書の演出が固定したのは江戸中期以降と考えられ、今日1000種ほどが各流各役に制定、登録されている。小書つきでは曲のねらいが変化し、また強調され、その上演は常の演能より重く扱われる。面(おもて)、装束、作り物、囃子(はやし)から登場人物まで変化することがあり、脚本が短くなり、あるいは別の脚本が挿入される場合もある。狂言にも少数の小書があるが、能のような本質的な変化はない。
