Abbreviation for Rich Internet Applications. A term that encompasses web applications that are more functional and operable than simple, static HTML and allow for richer expression, as well as the mechanisms and concepts used to realize them.

RIA is a representative initiative that aims to enhance the functionality of applications accessed via the Internet using browsers and other devices by utilizing the latest technologies, including Dynamic HTML, which is an extension of HTML, DOM (Document Object Model), Flash, which can create moving images such as animations, Java, Silverlight, Ajax, FLEX, and ColdFusion. It will also be possible to add functionality on par with that of regular applications to web applications, which were previously focused on simple tasks. There is an organization called the RIA Consortium, and many companies are involved in the standardization of the underlying technology and its use in business.
