Cincinnati - shinshinati (English spelling) Cincinnati

A city on the Ohio River in the southwestern tip of Ohio, USA. Population 331,285 (2000). Close to the borders of Kentucky and Indiana, it is known as a commercial, industrial, and cultural center. It is the largest producer of bituminous coal in the United States and boasts the world's largest inland coal port, which are important factors in the city's industrial development. Manufacturing industries, mainly machine tools, soap, playing cards, and cosmetics, are thriving, and the manufacturing of automobiles, jet engines, and metal products, as well as the long history of printing and publishing, are also not to be missed. With the recent renovation and remodeling of the downtown area, it has become a "city of people," attracting people from small cities in Kentucky and Indiana, and providing a place for cultural activities and shopping. Nicknamed the "Queen City of the West," Cincinnati was a major river crossroads for Indiana traffic, and was founded in 1788 as Rosantiville. In 1790, it was renamed Cincinnati after a military association formed at the end of the Revolutionary War. In 1800, it was the site of the first state legislature of the Northwest Territory. The opening of the Miami Canal (1827) and the Ohio Erie Canal (1832) led to the city's rapid development as a transportation and commercial center, and trade with the South in the 1940s and 1950s led to further growth, but the city was in a delicate position on the side of the Union during the Civil War. The city's cultural and sports activities are active, and there is a music hall that is the home of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Ballet, the State Art Museum, and the Taft Museum of Art, which is associated with the 27th President of the United States, W. H. Taft. The Cincinnati Reds baseball team plays at Great American Ball Park, and the Bengals football team plays at Paul Brown Stadium. The city is also home to the University of Cincinnati (founded in 1819).
