The Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, is called Gahai-i or Chuseok in Korea and is considered the most important day of the year. The name Gahai-i is said to have originated from the time of King Yuri of Silla (1st century), when women in the capital were divided into two groups and competed in a hemp-spinning contest, on which day the winner was decided and a hundred songs, dances and entertainment were performed, which was called Gahai.
