Solo recitation - Dokugin

Japanese:
Solo recitation - Dokugin

A term used in Japanese music. Singing by one singer. This term is also used in Noh, where it is a casual performance style in which a relatively long section is sung by one person without accompanying accompaniment, but is generally used in Nagauta. In this case, it refers to singing the entire piece by one person, and pieces sung solo are sometimes called "dokuginmono." Dokuginmono includes all works called "meriyasumono," as well as "Miyakodori" and "Matsu no Midori." "Meriyasumono" are short pieces performed by one shamisen and one singer, and are often san-shitari (a traditional Japanese musical instrument with a melody that is a simple and sad tune). It was mainly born from the geza music of kabuki, and was used as background music for the actors' gestures, such as lamentation, recollection, and colorful patterns. Representative examples include "Keisei Muken no Kane," "Godai Riki," "Kurokami," and "Momijiba." Originally, parts of Nagauta songs were often used, but there are many cases where these short parts have become independent Nagauta songs.
