Another name for the houses of aristocrats built in the Heian and Kamakura periods that incorporated famous springs in Kyoto. Famous examples include Shirakawa Izumidono and Rokuhara Izumidono. In Kyoto, gardens were created to take advantage of underground water, so places where groundwater gushed forth were more important than drawing in a stream, and this was an important condition for building shinden-zukuri houses with gardens. For this reason, houses with springs were popular, and ponds were dug to make use of the springs. Small pavilions built overlooking such ponds for the purpose of cooling off in the evenings or enjoying themselves are also called Izumidono. Note that in shinden-zukuri houses, there is a theory in old books that the buildings overlooking the pond at the end of the left and right central corridors are called Izumidono and Tsuridono, respectively, but this is incorrect.
