...This is a typical doll made in Kyoto, and in Edo it was called various names such as "souvenir dolls," "gift dolls" and "Ouchi dolls" because they were given by the Imperial Palace. After the Ansei period (1854-60) at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, most of the dolls were made by the Osaka doll shop Izukura Kihei, so they were also called "Izukura dolls." Small, bloated dolls of the Imperial Palace were called "haihai" and were used as gifts for newborns and to ward off misfortunes on the road, and were also displayed on doll stands. ...
