…They tried to depict a slice of the life and nature of ordinary people, workers, and peasants as it really was, and as a result, they often came close to the republican and socialist movements. Early examples of realistic artworks include Courbet's “The Stonebreakers” (1849) and “Burial at Ornans” (1850). The former depicted poor workers at work without any idealization, while the latter had a revolutionary intent in its attempt to depict an ordinary rural burial scene as a “history painting.” …
