Battleship Potyomkin (English: Battleship Potyomkin)

Battleship Potyomkin (English: Battleship Potyomkin)

Soviet film. 1925 production. Directed by Sergei Eisenstein. Not only did it announce the birth of Soviet cinema after the revolution, but it is also a masterpiece of silent film in the history of cinema. Based on the Potemkin mutiny that actually occurred in 1905, it praises the mutinous sailors as the leaders of the October Revolution. The story is divided into five parts: Sailors and Maggots, Mutiny on Deck, Appeal of the Dead, Odessa Steps, and Meeting of the Fleet. It is characterized by a fast tempo, dynamic scenes, powerful composition, and fragmented montage, but also has the character of a documentary film. It overwhelmed audiences with its novelty, which was different from the entertainment-centered filmmaking of the time, such as the depiction of a group without a specific protagonist, symbolic montage represented by a stone lion statue rising up, a rhythm of slow and fast that intertwines movement and stillness, and a passionate message for the revolution. The most famous scene is "The Odessa Steps," in which the citizens of Odessa are massacred by Tsarist soldiers. As a perfect example of a propaganda film and an excellent example of montage theory, it has had a major impact on filmmakers around the world. In Japan, the film was shown in a non-theatrical independent screening in 1959 (Showa 34), and then released to the general public in 1967. Since the original print was lost, incomplete prints due to censorship cuts were circulating, but a complete version was edited in the Soviet Union in 1976 and released in Japan the following year.
