A dialect of French. It is the language that developed into a unique language during the nearly two centuries of French colonialism that was established in the mid-16th century as New France, and was spoken by French settlers in the French colonies on the east coast of North America (which at its peak included the present-day province of Quebec and the eastern Maritime provinces of Canada), especially in the late 18th century, when they were cut off from contact with France itself. Compared to standard French, the gender and number agreement of nouns and adjectives is not as strict, and verb endings are simplified. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
