Taizo Ishizaka

Taizo Ishizaka
Born: June 3, 1886 in Saitama
[Died] March 6, 1975, Tokyo. One of the leading post-World War II businessmen. His father was a clerk at the Supreme Court. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in 1911, he worked for the Ministry of Communications, but in 1915, he was seen by Yano Tsuneta, founder of Dai-ichi Life Insurance, and joined the company. He worked to reform the life insurance company's management, and in 1938 he became president, while also serving as an executive officer for Tokyu Corporation and other companies. In 1948, he was asked to join Tokyo Shibaura Electric to help rebuild the company, and the following year he became president (chairman from 1957 to 1965). He resolved one of the biggest labor disputes in history, and successfully rebuilt the company. He also held many other important positions in companies and organizations. In 1956, he became chairman of the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren), and was one of the leaders of the postwar business world, advocating industrial liberalism and promoting economic internationalization.

第2次世界大戦後の代表的実業家。父は大審院書記官。 1911年東京帝国大学法学部を卒業後逓信省に勤務したが,15年第一生命保険の創立者矢野恒太に見込まれて,同社に入社。生命保険会社の経営の革新に取組み,38年社長となるとともに東京急行電鉄などの役員も兼務。 48年に請われて東京芝浦電機再建のために同社へ入社,翌年社長に就任し (1957~65会長) ,有史以来屈指といわれた労働争議を解決して同社の再建に成功。ほかに企業,団体など多数の要職をつとめた。 56年経済団体連合会 (経団連) 会長に就任,産業の自由主義と経済の国際化促進論で,戦後財界の指導者の一人であった。
