The coastal region facing the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa. It stretches from the Niger River Delta in present-day Nigeria in the east, through Benin, and reaches the border between Togo and Ghana in the west. During the slave trade that took place from the 15th to the 19th centuries, this coast was the most active area for slave trading, and Europeans came to call it the "Slave Coast." Large numbers of black slaves were shipped from coastal ports such as Porto Novo to the Americas.
