The capital and largest city of the state of Iowa, located in central Iowa, USA. Population: 194,000 (1994). Located on the Des Moines River. The origin of the city's name is unclear, but some theories suggest that it is from the French word "moyen" (middle) (as the Des Moines River is located between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers), or "moines" (monks), or the name of an Indian tribe, Moingona. Founded in 1843, it developed as the center of the Corn Belt and coalfields, and is home to a concentration of industries, including agricultural machinery, commerce, and insurance.
