Ikegoryo

In the mid-17th century, the foundations of early modern Sanuki rural areas were solidified through the reclamation of Haruta Shinden and Hyakukoku Shinden by filling in the seashore in Yamada County, the expansion of farmland by the reclamation of Ohnohara, centering on the construction of Izeki Pond in Toyoda County, land surveys beginning in 1665 (Kanbun 5) in the Takamatsu domain, and the construction of numerous reservoirs throughout the country to alleviate water shortages caused by drought and secure water for agriculture. The Shiwaku Islands and Shodo Island, located in key locations for maritime traffic on the Seto Inland Sea, had been Tenryo since the beginning of the Tokugawa shogunate, but after the abolition of the Ikoma clan, three villages in Naka County (over 2,290 koku) became Tenryo to secure funds for the construction of Manno Pond (these were called Ikegoryo). In Shiwaku, Toyotomi Hideyoshi awarded the island's rice yield (1,250 koku) to the ninmiyo (people who made up the island), and since then the island's politics have been run by council of elders, the most influential people among the ninmiyo. In 1797 (Kansei 9), a guardhouse where the elders could carry out government affairs was built (now restored and preserved).

…　17世紀中ごろの讃岐では，山田郡の海浜の埋立てによる春田新田，百石（ひやくこく）新田の干拓や豊田郡の井関（いぜき）池の築造を中心とした大野原開拓による農耕地の拡大，高松藩領における1665年(寛文5)に始まる検地，また干害による水不足を解消して農業用水を確保するための各地における多数の溜池の築造など，讃岐における近世農村の基礎が固められた。瀬戸内海の海上交通の要地に位置する塩飽諸島や小豆島などは幕初から天領であったが，生駒氏改易後は新たに満濃池の普請費用を確保するため那珂郡の3ヵ村(2290石余)が天領となった(これを池御領（いけごりよう）という)。塩飽では豊臣秀吉より島の構成員たる人名（にんみよう）に島の石高(1250石)が与えられ，以来人名の中の有力者である年寄の合議によって島の政治が行われ，1797年(寛政9)には年寄が政務を執る勤番所（きんばんしよ）が建てられた(現在，復元･保存されている)。…
