Mahābhārat Lekh

Japanese: マハーバーラト[山脈]（英語表記）Mahābhārat Lekh

A mountain range stretching for about 800 km from west-northwest to east-southeast in southern Nepal. It lies between the southern foot of the main Nepal Himalayas and the Siwalik Hills overlooking the Ganges Plain. It is 13-16 km wide, and its highest point, 2,560 m, is about 30 km southeast of Kathmandu. The great rivers that collect the water of the Himalayas cross this mountain range in narrow, deep gorges and flow out into the Ganges Plain. The mountainside is cultivated in terraces, and the area is densely populated for a mountainous region. [Takayama Ryuzo]

ネパールの南部を，西北西から東南東方向に，約800kmにわたってのびる山脈。ネパール･ヒマラヤ主嶺の南麓とガンガー(ガンジス)平野に臨むシワリク丘陵の間にある。その幅は13～16km，最高点2560mはカトマンズの南東約30kmにある。ヒマラヤの水を集める大河川は，狭く深い峡谷をなしてこの山脈を横切り，ガンガー平野に流れ出る。山腹は階段状に耕され，山地にしては人口が密である。【高山竜三】
