Aguascalientes (English spelling)

Japanese: アグアスカリエンテス(英語表記)Aguascalientes
Aguascalientes (English spelling)
The capital of Aguascalientes State in central Mexico. It is located about 400km northwest of Mexico City, on the east bank of the Aguascalientes River, a part of the Lerma River system. It is about 1,880m above sea level. It was founded in 1575 as a mining center, and became the state capital when the state was founded in the 1850s. The city's name means "hot water" in Spanish, and comes from the fact that there are many hot springs in the surrounding area, but it is often called Ciudad Perforada (meaning "town with holes") because a labyrinth of tunnels thought to have been built by indigenous people were excavated under the city. Currently, it is the commercial and industrial center of an agricultural region that mainly produces fruits and vegetables, and in addition to distributing agricultural products, it has industries such as railroad car repair, cotton textiles, wool textiles, pottery, tobacco, and distilled liquor. The city is home to numerous churches, including the San Juan de Dios and La Parroquia Cathedrals, which house excellent religious art, and the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes. Population: 506,384 (1990 estimate).
