Ikawa

Ikawacho is a former town located in Miyoshi-gun, in the northwest of Tokushima Prefecture. It is now the northeastern part of Miyoshi City. It is located on the south bank of the Yoshino River. The former Ikawacho was formed in 1959 (Showa 34) when Tsujicho and Inouchidanimura merged. In 2006 (Heisei 18), Ikawacho merged with the three towns of Mino, Ikeda, and Yamashiro and the two villages of Higashi-Iyayama and Nishi-Iyayama, and became Miyoshi City. The JR Tokushima Line runs through the area, and the Dosan Line branches off from it. National Route 192 runs parallel to the railroad, and the Ikawa-Ikeda Interchange of the Tokushima Expressway is located here. Mizunoguchi Pass (1,110 meters) to the south was an important transportation route to Ko-Iya until the Iya Road was built in the Taisho era. The central Tsuji district is the valley entrance settlement of Iuchidani, and has been known since the feudal era as a specialty area for cut tobacco. The former Iuchidani village in the eastern part of the region is the site of the Iuchidani Ikki uprising in 1842 (Tenpo 13), in which 400 peasants protested and demanded a reduction in tribute. There is a ski resort on the northern slope of Mt. Kaina (1,333 meters). Chorakuji Temple is home to a colored silk statue of the willow-leaf Kannon, a nationally designated important cultural property.
