The capital of Sucre State in northeastern Venezuela. It is located about 300 km east of the capital Caracas, a little upstream from the mouth of the Manzanares River, which flows into the Caribbean Sea. Founded in 1523, it is said to be the oldest European-built city in South America. Although it suffered damage from pirate attacks and repeated earthquakes, it prospered through trade with the surrounding areas and mainland Spain during the colonial period. Today, with a rich agricultural area behind it, it has developed into a commercial and industrial center. In addition to distributing coffee, cacao, sugar cane, tobacco, beans, and fruit, the canned sardine industry is important. There is a large cotton textile factory nearby. It is the home of the University of Oriente (1958). A road connects it to Barcelona in the southwest. Population 212,492 (1990).
