Ando Kou

A violinist active from the late Meiji period to the prewar Showa period. Born in Tokyo. His talent was recognized while he was still a student at the Tokyo Music School (Tokyo University of the Arts), and he was active in concerts and other events. After graduating from the school's research department, he went to Europe in 1899, studying under Joachim and others. After returning to Japan in 1903, he continued to teach at the school until 1932, and after retiring from the government he taught there for 10 years. From the autumn of that year to the end of the year, he became the first Japanese person to serve as a judge at an international competition, and traveled abroad again. Like his sister, Koda Nobu, he raised many children, and is known for teaching the Empress Dowager Yoshiko of Emperor Showa. His older brothers were Koda Rohan and Gunji Shigetada. In 1905, she married the English literature scholar Ando Katsuichiro.

明治後期から昭和戦前にかけ活躍したバイオリン奏者。東京生まれ。東京音楽学校(東京芸大)在学中から才能を認められ演奏会などで活躍。同校研究科を修了後,明治32(1899)年に欧州留学,ヨアヒムほかに師事した。36年の帰国後は同校教授を昭和7(1932)年まで続け,退官後10年間は同校講師。同7年秋から年末に日本人初の国際コンクール審査員となり再度の外遊をした。姉の幸田延と同様に多くの子弟を育てたほか,昭和天皇の皇后(皇太后良子)を教えたことが知られる。幸田露伴,郡司成忠は兄。明治38年に英文学者安藤勝一郎と結婚。
