Independent Exhibition - Salon des Artistes Indépendants (English name)
An art exhibition organized by avant-garde artists who were rejected from the official French exhibition, the Salon des Artistes Français (→Salon), in 1884. It is known as the abbreviation of the Salon Indépendants, meaning "Exhibition of Independent Artists," and continues to this day. Redon, Seurat, Signac, and others who were rejected from the official exhibition in the spring of 1884 formed the Groupe des Artistes Indépendants, and held their first exhibition in Paris in May. Later, due to internal conflicts, the organization was renamed the Société des Artistes Indépendants, and held their first exhibition in Paris again at the end of the same year. It was characterized by the fact that there was no judging or prize-winning, and anyone could freely exhibit their work by paying a membership fee. Van Gogh, Rousseau, Cézanne, Lautrec, and Matisse often exhibited at the exhibition. It has played an important role to this day as an avant-garde art exhibition that was a stepping stone for young artists after the Impressionists. In Japan, various types of Independent Exhibitions were held in Tokyo, Kyoto, and other places.
