… At a time when talkies were in vogue and sound was everywhere in films, this film is considered the first original attempt at talkie aesthetics, solving the problem of dramatic or emotional processing of sound by using the asynchronicity of images and sound contrapuntally, for example by adding the sound of a passing train or music from a record during a fight scene. It was more highly praised in Berlin, where it was released under the tagline "The most beautiful film in the world," than in Paris, where it was released under the tagline "The All-Talkie in French." Since it topped the world's best film poll in Der Deutsch, beating out All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), it has been praised as the first artistic triumph of talkies, and was publicized worldwide along with the theme song composed by Raoul Moretti (1893-1954).
