…He studied in Germany, and in 1922, while still in his capacity as Army First Class Surgeon (later Major General), he became a professor at the University of Tokyo, where he served for 18 years, during which time he also served as Dean of the School of Medicine. Due in part to his own practical concerns of improving military selection methods, he began researching eye charts and color blindness charts, establishing the Japanese Eye Chart and the Ishihara Color Blindness Chart, the latter of which was published in Western language in 1917 and is internationally recognized, primarily for use in screening color vision tests. He also made other contributions to ophthalmology in general, and his textbooks were widely used. …
