…The by-products of raw silk, such as dirty cocoons, raised cocoons, shelled cocoons, and balled cocoons that are difficult to spin into silk or that cannot be used for spinning, are refined with alkaline agents such as soap, lye, and soda, washed thoroughly, and then spread out in water one by one to remove the chrysalis (pupa) and impurities from inside.
