Khasi people - Khasi people (English spelling)
Inhabitants of western Assam, India. Their language belongs to the Mon-Khmer family, and their morphology is archaic Mongoloid. Their population is estimated at about 800,000. They practice slash-and-burn cultivation of rice, corn, foxtail millet, and cotton, and also cultivate wet rice in the lowlands. They have a chiefdom, with a hierarchical hierarchy of royalty, nobility, and commoners. They have matrilineal exogamous clans, and practice matrilocal marriage. Although inheritance is practiced by youngest daughters, the position of chief is passed on to the eldest son of the eldest daughter, and political and property management is carried out by males. Ancestor worship was well developed, but like other systems, this has changed with the spread of Christianity. Their settlement is the center of megalithic culture in Assam, with menhirs, dolmens, and stone platforms, and cow sacrifices are practiced. This megalithic culture has deep ties with the Naga and Munda tribes of Assam.
