When you hold some paper up to the light, you can see a light and shade pattern (or letters). This light and shade pattern is called watermark, and the process of creating watermarks is called sukiire. It started when papermakers devised ways to leave patterns on the paper by hand, in order to distinguish their products from others. In modern Fourdrinier papermaking machines, sukiire is done with dandy rolls placed on a flat wire screen where the sheet is formed. As the wet sheet moves along with the wire screen, the dandy rolls rotate, flattening the surface of the wet paper and squeezing out the water.
