University of Alcala - Alcala High School

Japanese:
University of Alcala - Alcala High School

A public university located in Alcalá de Henares (Spain), 30km east of Madrid, the capital of Spain. The original university was founded in 1293 as the Estudio Generale, a cathedral school, and was officially established as a university in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros. Its purpose was not only to educate clergy but also to train bureaucrats. It reached its peak in the 16th and 17th centuries, welcoming humanists from both within and outside of Spain, such as Erasmus, and publishing the Multilingual Bible by Nebrija and E. Ade, who wrote Spain's first grammar book. It was moved to Madrid in 1836, and shares its origins with the Complutense University of Madrid. It was rebuilt as the University of Alcalá in 1977. The historic center of Alcalá de Henares, where the university is located, including the university buildings, was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) in 1998. The reasons for its registration include being the world's first planned university city, serving as a model city for other cities in the Americas and other European countries, and contributing to the development of academic fields such as linguistics.
