Da Vinci was born as an illegitimate son of Florentine notary Ser Piero da Vinci in Vinci, near Florence, and spent his childhood in the natural surroundings of the upper Arno River. His curiosity about the natural world was the most fundamental thing he had ever had throughout his life, and it is believed that it was during this time that it was cultivated. Psychologists such as S. Freud and E. Neumann also believed that the fact that he was separated from his birth mother immediately and raised in a complicated family situation was the cause of a maternal complex, which had a profound impact on his artistic expression later in life, especially on his portrayal of women.

　フィレンツェの公証人セル･ピエロ･ダ･ビンチの私生児としてフィレンツェ近郊のビンチVinciに生まれ，少年時代をアルノ川上流の自然の中に過ごす。自然界の現象への好奇心は生涯を通じてもっとも根本的なものであったが，それはこの時期に培われたものと思われる。また，S.フロイトやE.ノイマンなどの心理学者は，生後直ちに生母から引き離され複雑な家庭状況に育てられたことが，母性コンプレクスの原因となり，成長後の芸術表現，とくに女性像に深い影響を与えたと考えた。
