The Nanai language belongs to the Tungus-Manchu language family and forms a group with the neighboring languages of the Ulitsi, Orochi, Udehe, and Orok peoples. In terms of livelihood and culture, these peoples share what might be called the "Amur culture." That is, they have settlements on riverbanks and islands, a hunting and gathering economy centered on salmon and trout fishing, a fish diet with dried fish (yukkola) as the main food, dugout canoes and dog sleds, summer and winter houses (pit dwellings), clan (hara) organizations, animism and shamanism, the deification of bears and tigers, and myths of shooting the sun. *Some of the terminology that refers to the "Amur culture" is listed below.
