Korean author. Born in Pyongyang. Arrived in Japan in 1932. Graduated from the German Literature Department of Tokyo Imperial University. After working as a journalist in the cultural affairs department of the Chosun Ilbo, he went on to graduate school at Tokyo Imperial University. His work In the Light, published in the Literary Capital in 1939, was nominated for the 10th Akutagawa Prize, marking his literary start. He published works such as Pegasus, Grass Deep, and Mukyu Family one after another, and while facing the tragic reality of colonial Korea and the hardships faced by Koreans in Japan, he sought a path to freedom. He was arrested in December 1941, and returned to Japan the following February upon his release. His collected works in Japan include In the Light (1940, Koyama Shoten) and Hometown (1942, Kocho Shorin). In Korea, he published the long novels Taebaek Sanmyaku (Japanese) and Song to the Sea (Korean). In the spring of 1945, he escaped to an anti-Japanese area in China and joined the Korean Volunteer Army. He returned to Korea immediately after liberation and published novels, plays, reportage, etc. One of his collected works is "Frost and Wind" (1948, Korea People's Publishing House). At the start of the Korean War in 1950, he served in the People's Army as a wartime writer and is believed to have been killed in action in the autumn of the same year.
