Attis

Japanese: アッティス(英語表記)Attis
Attis
A god who was the lover of the great Phrygian goddess Cybele, widely revered in the Greek and Roman worlds. Although he was a beautiful man, he betrayed her and tried to marry a human princess, which angered Cybele. When the goddess appeared during their wedding ceremony, he went mad, cut off his penis under a pine tree, and died. Following his example, the priests (→corybantes) who served Cybele had the custom of castrating themselves. The cult of Attis and Cybele was incorporated into the official Roman religion and became very popular as a mystery religion in late antiquity.
