Japanese: さえずり(囀り) - さえずり（英語表記）song

A special, beautiful song that birds make during the breeding season. A term for a ground call. It is particularly well developed in passerine birds, and is generally sung by males. Singing has two main important functions. One is to declare territory. Territorial boundaries themselves are often maintained through aggressive behavior, but singing serves to keep other males away from one's territory. The other function is to attract females and form pairs.

鳥が繁殖期に出す特殊な美しい鳴き声。地鳴きに対する語。分類学上のスズメ目の鳥で特によく発達しており，さえずるのは一般に雄である。さえずりには主に二つの重要な機能がある。一つはテリトリー(なわばり)の宣言である。テリトリーの境界そのものは攻撃行動によって維持されることが多いが，さえずりはほかの雄を自分のテリトリーに近づけさせない働きをもっている。もう一つの機能は，雌をひきつけてつがいを形成することである。
