Thick-walled structure

Sclerenchyma is a tissue made up of sclerenchyma cells, and is found in various parts of the plant body, such as in the vascular bundles of stems and roots, or in the cortex and pith. When stems or roots age, the entire cortex or pith may become sclerenchyma. Sclerenchyma cells often lose their protoplasm as they mature, and their cell walls become uniformly thickened, have pits here and there, and often become lignified and hard. Sclerenchyma is therefore also a mechanical tissue that resists forces such as bending, stretching, and compression applied to the plant body.

厚壁細胞からなる組織で、厚膜組織ともいい、茎や根の維管束の構成要素として、あるいは皮層や髄の内部など植物体の各部分に存在する。また茎や根が古くなると、皮層や髄全体が厚壁組織になる場合もある。厚壁細胞は成熟すると原形質を失う場合が多く、その細胞壁は一様に肥厚し、ところどころに壁孔があり、しばしば木質化して硬くなる。そのため厚壁組織は、植物体に加えられる屈折、伸張、圧縮などの力に抵抗する機械組織でもある。
