The capital of the canton of Uri in central Switzerland. Population 7,196 (2001). Located where the valley of the Reuss River, which runs north to south, ends at the southern shore of Lake Uri (southeastern Vierwaldstättersee), the town is easily affected by the föhn winds. It is a key location for rail and road transport connecting the north and south of the country, as well as the administrative and educational center of the canton, and is home to a federal munitions factory, cable, rubber, and plastic factories. It is the legendary site depicted in F. Schiller's play "Wilhelm Tell," and there is a theater (opened in 1899) where the play is performed every year. In the center of the town, there is a monument at the spot where Tell is said to have shot an apple placed on his son's head, and many tourists visit for the purpose of seeing it.
